Countless books have been devoted to single roadside-culture and car-related subjects. But this book addresses, in one volume, the huge variety of American pop culture's love affair with the automobile -- an expanse of fond memories and compelling kitsch as vast as the nation itself. This smorgasbord offers a tasty assortment of entries and accompanying images touching upon all the old chestnuts (Route 66, drive-in restaurants, filling stations, et al), as well as some edgier topics to appeal to younger generations interested in the seedier and/or more whimsical sides of roadside America (hood ornaments, crash test dummies, 1950s juvenile-delinquent hot rod films, and more). Loaded with color photos.

The ultimate bathroom reader! - 12/13/2005

Before this book I didn't know history could be fun. Nor did I know miniature golf began at Rock City, that Checker was actually a car manufacturer, that Chevrolet buitl a car called the "Black Widow" or that the origins of crash test dummies was truly gruesome!
