"Junk Pirate" zine reproduces weird, quirky, funny, and/or disturbing found art, commercial and educational graphics, and other neat looking stuff, with ironic juxtapositions a-plenty. Every image, drawing, illustration, diagram, list, and photograph was donated to the junk store in Oakland where the author works. Every issue is handmade with scissors, glue, photocopies, and occasionally a manual typewriter. This book covers the first 12 issues, in more or less chronological order, with some pages cut, others consolidated, and a few extra tidbits added here and there. Hints on bicycle safety; boxing moves; anatomical diagrams; patriotic stickers; tooth brushing instructions; medical instruments; anatomical and medical diagrams; sports instruction graphics; sewing supplies; play money; much much more. Black and white.

We need more stuff. - 06/16/2009

I've been using this book of reference material for sketches for the past month or so and it keeps inspiring me. I really wish I could get the stories behind some of the images and photos here. The collections of Joker cards and board game money are my favorites.

Fun feast galore. Like falling face first into a pile of overproduced ephemera of the past while a family reunion someone threw away plays games with it and you're the one who wins--every time. Packed with the weirdness people make all collected and arranged with a big smile.

The triumph of refuse. - 01/02/2007

I first saw the Junk Pirate book at the release party in Oakland and have given it a look just about everyday since then. There are literally thousands of images that cover the full emotional range from nostalgic to twisted to sexy to confusing to hilarious to ironic and then back again. Guarenteed you will find several images that strike a chord with you, be it a video game instructional diagram or a collection of Kool-Aid points. This is an excellent source of material for artists. The hand-stamped numbering and random end-pages (my copy had accounting ledger and some typed pages in Russian) make this book a bargain. For fans of Crap Hound, Found, or random ephemera, Junk Pirate is for you.
