Everyone loves the Cometbus travelogues. (It's nice to read about being sick and miserable on a Greyhound bus, when it's not you doing the suffering.) This issue, Aaron travels with old friends, Green Day, on their Asian tour. His mantra is, "Don't be judgmental, don't be difficult, don't be self-righteous. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride. Don't be judgmental, don't be difficult..." We can't wait to see how it turns out. What Kerouac was to the Beat Generation, Aaron Cometbus is to the East Bay punk scene. Treat yourself to a great read.

I ADORE THIS MAN'S WRITING

And reading about Green Day wasn't too shabby, either. Sharing in the adventure of traveling with the band, reading about the early days, and feeling the push and pull of then versus now made for an exhilarating read. I didn't want it to end, and I will definitely be reading more from Mr. Cometbus.

Art Matters. (So do friends.)

by Kristine

Finally, I read Patti Smith's JUST KIDS (about her love and friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe and lots of other artists). We're cheapskates here at Last Gasp, so we held out for the softcover and the wait was excruciating. The book was terrific, and I didn't want it to end. Fortunately, just as I read the last pages and looked at the last photographs, COMETBUS 54 arrived. The themes of creativity, friendship, and growth continue. And you don't have to wait for the softcover edition.
